Because Windows Server 2003 domains in a forest share a single schema, configuration container, and global catalog, and are linked by two-way transitive trusts, you should strive to have only one forest for your organization. Ideally, the use of multiple forests should be temporary and reserved for situations such as a merger, acquisition, or part nership where two or more organizations must be joined. By defining multiple forests, you add substantial administrative and usability costs to your organization.

Although you should strive to define only one forest for your organization, there are some situations that might warrant the creation of multiple forests. You might need to consider creating multiple forests if you need to:

The Computer Configuration branch of Group Policy includes a variety of computer-related settings, and the User Configuration branch includes a variety of user-related settings. The line between computer settings and user settings is often blurred, however. Because local Group Policy settings apply to all users, your best bet for discovering the policies you need is to examine them all. You ll find a treasure trove of useful settings, including many that can t be made any other way short of hacking the registry. In the Administrative Templates folders, you ll find more than 240 computer settings and more than 440 user settings, which makes this sound like a daunting task but you ll find that you can quickly scan the policies in each folder and ignore most of them. To learn more about each policy, simply select it, as shown in Figure F-3 on the next page. If you have selected the Extended tab at the bottom of the window, a description of the selected policy appears in the center pane.

Secure data Sensitive data can be protected so that only users within that forest can access it, such as a situation where business units must be separately main tained or when there is a need to isolate the schema, configuration container, or global catalog. Isolate directory replication Schema changes, configuration changes, and the addition of new domains to a forest affect only that forest. Accommodate development/lab environments New or test environments that may not yet be ready for production can be isolated from the rest of the organization.

Dynamic SQL can be a powerful tool. It can also be dangerous if placed in the hands of the wrong users. Even for users who aren t malicious, the dynamic SQL option can allow them to create queries that cause poor performance due to a lack of proper indexing for the query in question. Many database administrators will object to the overuse of dynamic SQL. While it definitely has its place, try to come up with other options before traversing down this route.

Each policy in the Administrative Templates folders of Group Policy has one of three settings: Not Configured, Enabled, or Disabled. By default, all policies in the local Group Policy object are initially set to Not Configured. (The policies in the Windows Settings folders do not have a Not Configured option and therefore have other default settings.) To change a setting, in the Group Policy console, simply double-click the name of the policy you want to change or click the Properties link that appears in the center pane of the Extended tab. The properties dialog box then appears. The dialog box for each policy under Administrative Templates looks much like the one shown in Figure F-4. The Setting tab includes the three options Not Configured, Enabled, and Disabled and a large area where you can make policy-specific settings. Controls in the center area appear dimmed and are unavailable unless you select the Enabled option. (Many simple policies leave this area blank because the policy needs no further setting.) The Explain tab provides detailed information about the policy (the same information that appears in the center pane of the Extended tab). The only place you re likely to find more information about each policy is in Group Policy Settings Reference for Windows, a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet available online.
