Windows SharePoint Services doesn t store most Web pages, picture files, and other page components in the Web server s file system. Instead, it stores them as records in a content database. FrontPage and, for the most part, the browser makes it appear that these files reside in a file system, but this is an illusion. Certain files, however, are exceptions. They appear to be in the content database, but reside instead in the server s file system. In SharePoint terminology, these files are ghosted.

The most intriguing feature of the DataGrid control is the ability to define custom con trol styles, that is, columns that contain any assortment of controls you wish, instead of the standard TextBox and CheckBox controls that you get by default. A custom column style is a class that derives from the DataGridColumnStyle abstract type and that overrides a few protected methods. There are three problems in creating a custom column style. First, it requires writing a lot of code. Second, the DataGridColumnStyle class is poorly documented in the .NET SDK. Third, you have to forgo the code generation capabilities of Visual Studio .NET when you create a table style that uses custom column styles because Visual Studio isn t aware of the new class you ve authored.

Most SharePoint sites have a _layouts folder and, as it turns out, this entire folder tree is ghosted. Windows SharePoint Services makes one physical copy of this folder tree appear to reside locally in each Web site. This has two advantages: It saves a lot of disk space. If you have 10,000 Web sites, you don t have 10,000 copies of the _layouts folder in your content database. You have one copy on disk. It simplifies the task of making global changes to Web sites. Any change you make to the <drive>\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS folder in the server s file system instantly shows up in every Web site. If you modify a ghosted file through FrontPage or a browser, Windows SharePoint Services un-ghosts that instance of the file: that is, it saves the modified version directly in the content database. That way, the site you edited uses the modified version, and all other sites continue to use the ghosted version. Most ghosted files and folders, however, aren t accessible via FrontPage. This is why you might see the _layouts folder in the browser s address bar, but not in the FrontPage Folder List or Folders view.

The HTML Viewer is not enough For example, when you need to handle multivalue parameters. The parameters need to be validated before the request is submitted A good approach would be to use the HTML Viewer by default and treat the reports that require custom parameters as exceptions to the rule. This is the approach that the Report Wizard takes. Let s look at an example of a report that requires a multivalue parameter and therefore needs special attention. Dealing with multivalue parameters Let s say that the AWC Sales department has requested a report that shows the purchase orders by salesperson, date range, and order number. Figure 10.11 illustrates the Purchase Orders report. The report itself is nothing to brag about. What makes it special is that it sponsors a multivalue Employee parameter. This allows the end user to type a commaseparated list of Employee identifiers to see the purchase orders submitted by multiple salespersons.

I can t do much about the last problem, but I can help you with the first two issues by providing a class named DataGridControlColumn that is able to host any control that you define. I created this class by modifying the only sample I found in the official doc umentation so that it can work with a generic control. The companion code includes the complete commented source for the DataGridControlColumn class, but here I ll just show you how you can use it in your applications.
